Currently, vector-borne diseases remain a global public health crisis, particularly Dengue Fever, Zika Virus, and Chikungunya, with the *Aedes* mosquito acting as the primary vector. Environmental management to break the mosquito life cycle is the most effective and sustainable strategy.

*Aedes aegypti* prefers to lay eggs in clean, stagnant water within man-made containers. *(2024 Update: Studies show increased urban adaptation of Aedes mosquitoes, making control more challenging).*

Covering water storage containers with cloth, nylon netting, or aluminum mesh is essential to prevent mosquitoes from accessing the water to lay eggs. Additionally, water must be changed every 7 days, especially in small containers like flower vases on altars, decorative tabletop vases, or glass jars used for pothos plants.

For large planters, use absorbent sand (such as Abate sand or specialized absorbent materials) in the saucer, filling it to 3/4 of the depth to manage water levels. For smaller pots, the best method is to empty any standing water every 7 days.

Accumulated debris such as bottles, jars, cans, or old tires serve as prime breeding sites that are often overlooked.

Instead of leaving old tires to collect water, repurpose them for utility, such as planters, chairs, or post bases. However, a critical condition is that they must be modified to prevent water accumulation. If used for playground equipment or swings, holes must be drilled for easy drainage, or if used as a fence, they must be buried deep enough to prevent water from pooling at the bottom.

Areas with dense vegetation often serve as resting spots for mosquitoes due to darkness and humidity. Pruning trees and shrubs to improve airflow and light penetration can reduce these hiding spots around the home.

When all water sources cannot be eliminated, supplementary methods become vital.

Introducing mosquito-eating fish—such as Guppies, Cambusia, Betta fish, Mollies, or Leadhead fish—into large water jars or cement tanks (not for drinking water) is a highly effective biological method for controlling mosquito larvae.
