Currently, Thai society is facing a hidden mental health crisis. While news of suicides appears frequently in the media, the statistical reality is even more alarming. Data from the Department of Mental Health indicates that approximately 5% of the Thai population, or about 3 million people, suffer from depression. Most concerningly, fewer than 100,000 of these individuals access professional medical treatment, meaning over 2 million people are fighting their internal struggles alone.
Social and political stressors often do not impact mental health immediately; instead, they act as a “time bomb” that manifests its effects 1-2 years later. This was evident during the 1997 economic crisis, which led to a surge in mental health issues between 1999 and 2000.

Regarding gender statistics, there are notable differences:
Depression is not merely “mental weakness” but a biological disorder involving neurotransmitters in the brain, specifically a deficiency in Serotonin, which regulates mood.
The fact that fewer than 100,000 patients access treatment is a major challenge for the Thai healthcare system. Reducing the stigma surrounding psychiatric consultation is essential. We must shift the perception from “seeing a psychiatrist is shameful” to “mental health care is as fundamental as physical healthcare.”
