In the world of alternative medicine, “Magnetic Therapy” has long been a subject of debate. This article explores the latest scientific advancements to understand how magnetic energy affects our bodies and whether there is medical evidence to support its use.
For a long time, the medical benefits of magnets have not been clearly proven, yet magnets have been widely used to treat various conditions. While previously viewed as an unsubstantiated alternative therapy, studies at the cellular and circulatory levels are beginning to provide more intriguing answers.
A key discovery from biomedical engineering research indicates that magnetic energy can influence blood flow at the microcirculation level.
Prof. Thomas Skalak from the Biomedical Engineering research center at the University of Virginia conducted a 5-year study. He found that exposure to high-strength magnets can increase blood flow in microcirculation. Experimental data showed that a 70 milliTesla magnet (approximately 10 times stronger than a refrigerator magnet) caused the smooth muscle of capillaries to relax and dilate, helping restore normal blood flow.
(Edema)
One of the most prominent benefits of magnets is the management of inflammation and edema.
According to research published in the *American Journal of Physiology*, in animal models stimulated to undergo inflammation, the immediate application of magnets resulted in a significant reduction in swelling and inflammatory responses. Prof. Skalak noted that the effect is comparable to immediate ice compression, which helps alleviate pain and reduce swelling.
Although magnetic therapy is still categorized as an alternative treatment in some contexts, the trend of integrating it into wearable devices is growing steadily.
While magnetic therapy may seem safe, there are critical precautions patients must know:
Pacemaker Users: Never use high-intensity magnets near the chest, as they can interfere with the device’s function.
Pregnancy: Avoid high-intensity magnetic therapy due to the lack of confirmed safety data regarding fetal development.
Implanted Metal: Such as orthopedic screws or ocular implants.
Magnetic therapy is transitioning from “belief” to “applied science.” While it cannot replace primary treatments for critical illnesses, the evidence regarding enhanced microcirculation and inflammation reduction is highly promising for the future of restorative medicine.
