(Conclusion)

A few days ago, I had the opportunity to care for a patient with Dengue fever in my local area. This incident reminded me that Dengue is not a distant threat; it is a silent danger that can affect anyone, especially vulnerable groups and children. This article compiles updated medical information to help you and your family prepare and respond correctly.

(Antibody-Dependent Enhancement – ADE)*

Dengue fever is caused by the Dengue virus, which has four main serotypes (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4). *Latest data emphasizes that secondary infection with a different serotype carries a high risk of severe disease due to Antibody-Dependent Enhancement (ADE).*

Typically, a primary infection may present with mild symptoms. However, the real danger lies in “secondary infection.” If you have been infected with serotype 1 and are later infected with serotype 2, your existing antibodies will not protect you; instead, they will “enhance” the immune response, leading to severe capillary leak, organ swelling (such as in the lungs, liver, and intestines), and potentially fatal shock.

(Symptoms can be categorized into three main phases):

(Unlike common flu)*

(High risk of severe dengue and shock)*
(Rash/Itching)

Physicians will use medical history and physical examinations, such as the Tourniquet Test (applying pressure to the arm to check for petechiae). If more than 20 petechiae are found within a specific area, the test is considered positive.

The primary vector is the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is a daytime biter and prefers to lay eggs in stagnant water.

  • Eliminate breeding sites: Flip containers with stagnant water and change vase water weekly.
  • Personal protection: Use insect repellents, especially during early morning and evening.
  • Vaccination: *Dengue vaccines are now available to help reduce disease severity. Consult a physician to assess suitability based on your infection history.*

Dengue is not just a common flu, and current trends show that adults can experience severe symptoms just like children. Monitoring “high fever” and “abdominal pain/bleeding” during the fever-reduction phase is crucial for survival. If you suspect infection, NEVER take NSAIDs (such as Aspirin or Ibuprofen) on your own, as they can significantly increase the risk of bleeding.
